Relocation Tips for Return-to-Office (RTO) Employees
When COVID-19 hit, most of the messages you heard from the media and corporate organizations were about the benefits of remote work and how it’s beneficial for both employees and employers. Now, the script has been flipped.
More employers are asking employees to return to office instead, which has led to a rise in relocations. If you’ll be in a new office, city, state or country soon, here are some tips to help ensure your next relocation goes smoothly.
Communicate Early and Often
Whether you’re moving for a new employer or your existing employer is asking that you return to the office, communication is important. Make sure you have a good understanding of the company’s RTO policies, moving timelines and any assistance or benefits offered. Keep clear lines of communication with your employer open and let them know about any changes or updates—and respond to their requests in a timely fashion.
Budget and Plan Appropriately
Planning and budgeting for moves is highly complex. First, try to understand and compile all of the moving expenses involved, from packing and unpacking to loading, packaging supplies, transport and fuel costs. There may be a new cost of living at your new location and your lifestyle/budget may need to be updated as a result. You’ll have a transition period as you figure out your new budget, but the earlier you plan, the better.
Downsize and Organize Quickly
Downsizing and organizing your belongings has two benefits for RTO employees (among others). For starters, there is less you have to move, which can generate income and reduce your moving expenses. Secondly, the fewer belongings you have and the quicker you can jump on a job offer or opportunity. Whether you trash, donate or sell them, giving your belongings a once-over for what is needed and what isn’t can help with your budget and efficiency.
Plan for Delays and Mistakes
Mistakes or delays are almost inevitable when you’re dealing with something as complex as moving and transportation. As such, it might be wise to add in gaps to your budget, time to your timeline and have backup moving help available, if you choose to hire. The better prepared you are for inconveniences, the less frustrating they’ll be when (or if) they happen.
