How Moving Professionals Load Moving Trucks

Want to move like a pro? Hiring one is the easiest way to accomplish this, but you can tap into valuable advice from professional movers even if you aren’t using them. Techniques like carefully packing valuable belongings and what to think about for subsequent loadings of trucks can be extremely valuable on move day.

Our professional movers are happy to share some advice. Here are tips for loading moving trucks, straight from the pros who do it every day.

1. Start with a plan.

One of the biggest initial mistakes is not making a plan. The best moving professionals start with measuring the size of the truck or container, then carefully plan out where and how to load boxes and other belongings. Consider creating an inventory of items and planning where certain item types will go in the moving truck by splitting the truck into sections.

2. Next, define a path.

In addition to planning how you’ll load the truck, plan a route to the truck as well. You want to keep the loading path as clear from clutter and debris as much as possible. Also, keep fragile items away from anywhere where they could be knocked over or something dropped on them. Pad anything along the path that you could bump into, as well. Plan your path!

3. Load Heavy Items First

If you sectioned out the moving truck in the planning step, you’ll have a good outline for how to store items by weight. Using small sections, add bulky or heavy things first and build out each section around them. You don’t want heavier items toward the top of a stack, as they could topple on lighter items that aren’t as secure.

4. Don’t Leave Gaps

When you load your moving truck, load it tightly. Gaps are opportunities for belongings or boxes to shift, which can lead to falling and damage. When you avoid gaps, there is less opportunity for items to move during transport. You don’t need to be perfectly flush with all available space, however. Just make sure you’re not leaving any huge gaps.

5. Secure As You Go

You want to tie down most of your items, but don’t save this until the end of the loading process. You don’t want to realize that you didn’t secure a heavy box or piece of furniture at the bottom of everything you just loaded. Plan, load in sections and review each section as you load.
