Downsizing? Tips for Moving Into a Smaller Space
People downsize for a variety of reasons. A popular one is when children move out of the house for college or a career. Another one is when we age and no longer want to maintain a large space. Whatever the reason, downsizing itself can be stressful.
Whether you’re downsizing from a home to an apartment or you’re simply getting a smaller house, here are some tips to help your residential move go easier.
Tip #1: Start With the Kitchen
If there’s a room that likely has a large number of items that go unused every day, it’s the kitchen. They sell so many different types of kitchen gadgets these days, it can make your head spin. We also tend to purchase kitchen items we find useful, only to use them once or twice and forget about them. Start your downsizing by getting rid of bulky or unnecessary items like rice cookers, bread makers, dehydrators and specialty gadgets. If you use these items, then, of course, keep them! But try to get rid of anything else.
Tip #2: Move On, Room By Room
It’s important to also keep in mind that this isn’t a sprint. Don’t try to tackle your entire house at the same time. Your new apartment or smaller space has limited room for you to store your items, so make sure you’re spending appropriate time deciding what you want to keep and get rid of. Focus on one room at a time.
Tip #3: Store What You Can
Many people find that they simply have more items they want to keep than they have room for at their new residence. A solution for this scenario is a storage solution like a container or facility. IMS Relocation has several partners in the storage space and can help you find a solution at your existing or new location.
Tip #4: Unpack Quickly
Procrastinators, we’re talking to you! Try to unpack moving boxes at your new location as soon as possible, or you run the risk of them becoming a permanent resident. Unpack and get settled in quickly and you’ll feel at home sooner than you might think.
Tip #5: Decorate Appropriately
Small spaces are decorated differently than larger spaces. Consider adding a mirror or two to open up the room and try to avoid dark colors. Keep furniture low and decor accents high to maximize the spacious feel of the place. Also, as we’ve mentioned, keep your belongings to a minimum and don’t try to cram too many items into your new home.
