What To Sell, Trash or Take for Your International Move

What To Sell, Trash or Take for Your International Move

Moving to a new home across town or across the state can be scary enough. However, a big international move can really test one’s patience. This is especially true when you realize that your beloved possessions must fit into one of three categories prior to your international move: sell, trash or pack.

What to Sell

Selling off some of your belongings comes with a number of benefits. To start with, it means you will have a little extra money. A properly arranged garage or estate sale can offer some very real financial padding. Of course, it also allows you a chance to declutter, and that will be a big plus when it comes to your international move.

So, what should you sell? Electronics quickly come to mind. Remember that your new country might not have the same electrical standard and this means some, most or all of your electronic items might not work there. Sure, there might be conversion kits, but the thought here is to take a closer look at what you can do without in this regard.

Keep in mind that furniture or larger items might be cheaper to buy in your new homeland than ship from your current home. Also, your wardrobe could likely benefit from a fire sale. After all, a new country means new trends and this presents you with a very good reason to shop for new clothes.

Items to Trash

If it’s broken, don’t fix it. Just toss it away. This goes for electronics and almost anything else in your current home. Is your closet full of worn-out clothing and run-down shoes? Let it all go or make a proper donation.

Expired medications or toiletries should also hit the dumpster. Also, let go of any chipped or mismatched dinnerware and old bedding. These things are just too easy to replace when you get where you’re going.

What about old paint or expired cleaning supplies? These items are begging to be trashed. Go ahead and dispose of these chemicals but be sure to do so in accordance with local regulations on chemical disposal.

What Should You Pack and Keep?

The rule of thumb here is to pack and take only the essentials and items that might be difficult to find or replace in your new country of residency. This might include important personal documents, sentimental items, such as family heirlooms and items of personal or professional value.

As an example, you would likely want to pack your camera if you’re a photography enthusiast. Books and artwork would likely be high on your list as they are more personal to you and artwork, in particular, might prove difficult to replace. Hobby items or collectibles should also be easy to pack and ship.

It’s a Great Time to Remember What’s Important

An international move might suggest a lot of stress, but it also presents you with a great opportunity to declutter and remember what’s important in your immediate life. Remember, having too much stuff is a good problem to have. However, it’s often been said that ‘less is more’ and that might be the lesson to learn here.
