A Guide to Temporary Housing
The housing market is crazy right now. It’s almost impossible to get a house in some markets. You’re lucky if you get a seller to accept an offer, even if it’s ABOVE their asking price. More and more are choosing temporary housing until the market settles down or until they can find a permanent home. If you’re in this boat, here are some tips.
Know Your Options
First, it’s important to know what temporary housing options you have available. Here are some of the more common options out there:
- Hotels: Whether extended stay or regular, these are a common choice for short-term housing. Hotels can be expensive if you’re paying for them yourself, however. But there are other perks like housekeeping/maintenance and laundry services.
- Airbnb: These and other similar companies let you live in a space that feels more like home, as these tend to be standalone homes, condos or townhomes. You might be able to negotiate better rates or perks like parking if you let the owner know you’re planning on staying a while. These are also great for scouting neighborhoods.
- Sublet/corporate housing: These lesser-known options may be available, depending on you and your employer’s situation. By taking on the portion of a lease or taking advantage of corporate housing, you can save money while you look for a home.
Get A Lay of the Land
As mentioned above, use your temporary housing as an opportunity to really decide on your permanent home and its location. Come up with a plan, determine your family’s priorities (e.g. school district, room for a pet, etc.) and ask your co-workers for advice on where to put down roots. One of the biggest advantages of temporary housing is that you don’t have to commit to living in a building or area you don’t know yet.
Storing Belongings While Living in Temporary Housing
The only question is, what do you do with all of your stuff while living in temporary housing? No matter what option you choose, it’s likely not going to have enough space for all of your family’s belongings. A traditional storage facility is an option and if you partner with IMS Relocation, you’ll be able to enjoy a variety of storage solutions at your disposal. And when your permanent home is ready, we’ll be there to relocate your belongings.
