6 Pre-Move Hacks To Enhance Your Move
“Winning” is defined as “gaining, resulting in, or relating to victory in a contest or competition.” It’s a form of accomplishment, which is why so many social media users add a hashtag (#winning) to their posts when they’re in a celebratory mood.
Are you #winning when it comes to moving? From hosting a pre-move yard sale to sorting your items ahead of time, there are several things you can do to ensure a seamless experience. Let’s go over six pre-move hacks to consider.
1. Create A Checklist
This may not seem like a hack because it’s so easy, but a checklist will make your moving experience much more organized and enjoyable. You can keep a list for everything from utilities and medical records to scouting your new location and finding a mover. Using an app is a good idea here as well, since you don’t have to keep a physical piece of paper with you.
2. Host A Pre-Move Yard Sale
As we’ve mentioned on this blog again and again, the less you have to move, the quicker and more efficient your move will be. Purge excess belongings, items and clutter by giving them away, trashing them or selling them via a pre-move garage sale / yard sale.
3. Eat Your Food!
Yes, vegetables make you healthy, but they don’t keep well when traveling long distances. Try to use as much of your perishables before the move as you can. You’ll have less to relocate, plus food shouldn’t go on a moving truck anyway. The more you eat, the less you waste.
(Try to also avoid any big shopping or grocery trips before the move.)
4. Consider Short-Term Storage
Short-term storage is a hack many people don’t think about, but it can be wonderful when it comes to unloading belongings at your new destination on your timeline. You don’t have to use storage for the long term, so consider short-term storage if you’d like to remove some of that pressure associated with unpacking.
5. Take Those Pics
Whether it’s the cords on the back of your TV or a wall decor arrangement, take pictures of anything that you want to display or assemble the same way at your new residence. By thinking ahead of time, you’ll avoid much of the frustration that comes with putting together something in a way that you don’t remember.
6. Disassemble Ahead of Time
After you’ve taken your pics, disassemble any furniture, electronics and other items that you can. For one, these items may not fit through certain doorways or pathways at your existing (or new) location. Secondly, it can be easier to contain these items, they fit better in the moving truck and are ready to assemble quickly again.
