6 of the Safest Towns in Texas
An unfortunate side effect of a rising population is often a rise in crime rates. As Texas continues to gain residents, families and individuals might be particularly concerned about safety when it comes to where they live.
Whether you’re considering a move to another part of the Lone Star State or you’re new to Texas in general, here are six of the safest towns in Texas to consider, according to a 2023 safest cities report from SmartAsset.
1. Frisco, TX
Frisco isn’t just the safest town in Texas; it’s the safest town in America! Two years in a row, in fact. According to SmartAsset, “Frisco has the fourth-lowest violent crime rate (95 crimes for every 100,000 residents) and the sixth-lowest property crime rate (901 for every 100,000 residents).” This is impressive considering the city’s population growth and rising number of amenities for residents. It’s also nice and far from both Dallas and Fort Worth downtown areas, which tend to have higher crime rates than the suburbs.
2. McKinney, TX
The second-safest city is situated on the Northeast corner of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. McKinney used to be a small rural community, but is now one of the fastest-growing communities in North Texas. Since it borders Frisco, it’s apparent that this part of DFW is the safest, so consider looking at areas near McKinney as well, such as New Hope, Melissa, Roland and Fairview.
3. McAllen, TX
The third-safest city is in a different area of Texas—specifically, on the U.S.-Mexico border on the southern end of the state. According to SmartAsset, “McAllen and the surrounding Hidalgo County have the second-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate (five deaths for every 100,000 residents) in our study and the seventh-lowest percentage of people engaging in excessive drinking (15.27%).”
4. Plano, TX
Fourth on the list, Plano is geographically near the top-two safest cities (Frisco and McKinney). The impressive part of Plano being on this list is that the DFW suburb covers a large amount of land area, going all the way from Dallas North Tollway on its west side to beyond Interstate 75 on its east side. Many residents of Plano are former residents of other areas in DFW, so it’s apparent this popular city is safe and accessible.
5. Laredo, TX
Laredo is another town near the U.S.-Mexico border that is safer than you might assume. According to SmartAsset, Laredo is the seventh safest city in the United states. If you still have doubts, WalletHub ranks Laredo as the third safest city in the United States. While these lists, including ours, have some subjectivity, there’s no disputing the low crime numbers, and high safety numbers, enjoyed by the citizens of Laredo.
6. El Paso, TX
El Paso is the sixth-safest town in Texas, but also ranks No. 12 overall in the country. Crime rates have drastically improved in recent years, making El Paso a mid-sized community that is a great alternative to other bigger areas like Houston and San Antonio. If you’re looking for a safe city in Texas, El Paso might be the right fit for you.
