4 Tips for Moving With Pets

When it comes to a move, big or small, pets can be a challenge. However, with the right preparation it can go as smoothly as you need it to. That’s why we have compiled this list of four tips for moving with pets to help you prepare and provide your pet with the smoothest transition possible.

1. Prepare Your Pets for the Big Day

Before moving with pets, it’s important to maintain your pet’s routine. Consistency in feeding, walking and playing is key. Any disruptions prior to moving day can add to the coming stress of the move.

Another thought is to make sure they are accustomed to their travel carrier if needed. This is especially true if your trip involves flying the family to your new location. One trick is to leave the carrier out for a few days so the pet is accustomed to seeing it and then placing treats and toys inside the carrier. By doing this, the pet will start to associate positive energy with the carrier.

2. Get Thee to a Vet

Schedule a check up at the vet before moving with your pet. You want to be sure that your pet is in good health and up to date on all vaccinations. Also, update any and all prescriptions and records. This will be especially helpful if you are moving out of town and will be choosing a new vet for your pet. Also, if your pet is microchipped make sure the new address is applied.

3. Help Your Pet Settle into Your New Space

Your new home is now your pet’s new home. If your pet is a dog he or she will likely accept the adventure with a bit of energy. Make sure that your pet knows where his or her safe space is right away. A bed or crate with their toys and blankets is a great way to ease your pet into their new space with items of familiarity.

Gradually allow your pet to go about your new home. It’s a good idea that you go with your pet so that he or she can associate your face with the new environment on that first day or two. Also, don’t break your pet’s feeding and walking routine. While they will likely embrace all of these new things, their old habits should still have a place in your new home.

4. Pet-Proof Your New Home

Once you are settled, do a thorough walk through. You will want to make sure each room is pet friendly. Watch out for toxic plants, exposed wiring and access to overhead balconies. Also, you might want to minimize access to rooms with carpets as they might not mix well with a nervous pet bladder on the first day or two.
