4 Moving Lessons Learned During the Pandemic
The pandemic has affected nearly every area of our lives—at least at one time or another. Moving and storage is no exception. Fortunately, there are some lessons we’ve learned because of it that can improve the process moving forward. (No pun intended.)
Let’s go over four moving and storage lessons we’ve learned during the pandemic:
1. Online Scouting Is An Option
One thing the pandemic taught us is that many activities we thought could only be done in person can be done virtually. Whether you want to tour a home, look up neighborhood crime statistics or see if the listing price is comparable to other recently sold homes, you can do it all from the comfort of your own home. More and more agents are using video conferencing software to give clients tours of prospective homes, and this should at least be an option for the foreseeable future.
2. Unwanted Items Are A Problem
We often recommend that you trash, sell or donate unwanted items to minimize the amount of stuff you’re moving. (This also helps you cut costs, potentially.) Unfortunately, during the pandemic, donating many items was off the table and more people were hesitant to buy anything used. As a result, many of us experienced increased clutter and had a difficult time getting rid of old belongings. Self-storage was one solution for this, and it remains a great option for storing extra household items today.
3. Backup Plans Are A Must
During the pandemic, a simple cough could warrant someone wanting to cancel a move. Whether it was someone from your household or the moving company, many of us canceled moves and other important events out of an abundance of caution. This is just one of the factors during the spread of COVID-19 that emphasized the importance of backup plans and being flexible. As a result, move schedules aren’t quite as rigid as they once were.
4. Hiring The Right Movers Is Essential
Finally, the pandemic showed the efforts of companies to keep their customers (and in the case of moving and storage, their belongings) safe. However you feel about COVID-19 safety precautions, the best service companies ensured that customers had peace of mind. This is just as important today and many of the cleaning and sanitization processes adopted during the pandemic will continue moving forward.
