4 Big Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Mistakes to Avoid
In our last post, we covered some summer moving mistakes people often make that you’ll want to avoid. Today’s post will cover some additional moving mishaps, but of the military kind.
From forgetting about weight allotments to not setting aside items you don’t want on the moving truck, there are common mistakes associated with military moves (also known as a Permanent Change of Station, or PCS). Here are four of them.
- Waiting To Address PCS Orders
If anyone knows the importance of avoiding procrastination, it’s members of the military. You’re used to being not just on time, but early, to every activity or event you attend. Don’t start procrastinating when you get your PCS orders. Take them to the transportation office immediately, as there is often a logjam of requests when PCS orders are sent out and many military members DO procrastinate when it comes to permanent changes of station.
- Not Organizing Belongings Ahead Of Time
Anyone preparing for a residential move should organize and separate items before the move. But this is especially important for military members who have special clearances or documents that shouldn’t be seen by anyone else. Make sure you separate what items will go in the moving truck and what items you’ll keep with you. Additionally, make sure you’re following military regulations on what you can and can’t take from your home.
- Failing to Prepare Your Home
One factor military members have to think about that civilians do not is weight allotments (also known as “Joint Travel Regulations.”) If you go over it, you’ll have to cover it from your own expenses. That means it’s important to prepare your home and get rid of any clutter, items or belongings you don’t need. Consider donating or trashing unneeded items until you get below your JTR.
- Choosing the Wrong Mover
Finally, you need to partner with a mover who is aware of military regulations, knows the logistics involved with military moves and has all of the processes in place to ensure a seamless military relocation.
